The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) officials on Friday realised Tk 17,500 as penalties from five traders on several allegations from different kitchen markets in the capital.

Three teams of the DNCRP led by its Dhaka Division Deputy Director Monjur Mohammad Shariar and two teams of the commerce ministry comprising other DNCRP officials conducted the drives in the 12 markets including Hatirpool, New Market, Palashi, Babu Bazar, Shyambazar and Mirpur Shah Ali wholesale onion and rice market.

The traders, dealing in baby foods, surgical masks, hand sanitisers and other essentials, were fined for various allegations such as price manipulations, not preserving the purchase receipts and overpricing, a statement said.

Following the instruction of DNCRP Director General Bablu Kumar Saha, the officials conducted the drives amid the critical atmosphere caused by the coronavirus outbreak, Monjur Mohammad Shahriar told the FE.

“We requested the consumers not to buy additional goods than necessary amid panic, so that the markets remain stable,” he said, adding that the traders were also requested to behave rationally in such a critical time for the whole nation.
