A 'drug addict' man allegedly killed his mother in Koalaghat area of Chandpur district town on Tuesday night.
The victim was identified as Jayeda Begum, 45, wife of Sharif Arab Ali of the town, according to UNB.
Locals said Sharif Hossain, 30, a rickshaw-puller, used to quarrel with his mother Jayeda and beat her as she refused to give him money for buying drugs.
Around 8:00 pm on Tuesday, Sharif had an altercation with his mother over the issue. At one stage, he first hit her in the head with a brick and later chopped her with a sharp weapon indiscriminately, leaving her injured critically.
She was taken to Chandpur General Hospital where doctors declared her dead, said officer-in-charge of Chandpur Model Police Station Waliullah Oli.
On information, police rushed in and arrested Sharif.
