Dune: A stunningly cinematic sci-fi epic

Ever since the trailer of Dune was released, fans of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi classic couldn’t wait for the release of the film.  

After the promising trailer and the stellar cast, Dennis Villeneuve’s take on Dune had high expectations. Speaking of expectations, you will be awestruck by the sheer level of care and attention to detail given in every single scene of the film. 

This movie is an absolute treat for both the ears and eyes. For those who have already read the book, this is going to be a very rewarding experience. And nonreaders will also want to get their hands on the book or at least be invested in its deep lore after seeing the sci-fi opera.

Replicating one of the densest books in the history of science fiction into a film is not an easy feat. While previous adaptions failed to do justice to its source material, Villeneuve’s version probably comes close to being as good as it can get. 

The movie which is titled onscreen as Dune part One, clocks in around two and a half hours and cover just half of the book. 

Dune is set over  8000 years in the future and humanity is under the imperial rule where several houses are assigned to control celestial estates according to the whims of the emperor. 

Duke Leto (Oscar Issac) of the house Atreides has been ordered to rule over the desert planet Arrakis replacing house Harkonnen. The planet is a source of spice called melange which is regarded as the most valuable substance in the universe. 

Harvesting the spice is hazardous since the planet is plagued by giant sandworms that swim beneath the desert surface. 

As House Atreides and its leader Duke Leto along with his concubine lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and son Paul (Timothée Chalamet) arrive on the planet, they have to deal with the machinations and treachery of the rival house Harkonnen.

As the struggle for control of Arrakis and its spice unfolds, our reluctant hero Paul must overcome herculean obstacles to save his house from ruin.

Apart from the intriguing plot, the cinematography, costume design, visual effects, the Hans Zimmer music score and the overall production quality makes it a satisfying cinematic experience. 

Every actor delivered their A-game. Rebecca Ferguson and Timothée Chalamet were spectacular. Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Harkonnen was truly menacing. There are several moments across the film that will send shivers down your spine. 

But nothing beats the ascent of the colossal sandworm. It was almost otherworldly, truly a sight to behold. Although the movie is designed to tell half of the story. There is a feeling that it comes to a halt abruptly which leaves you wanting for more.

Overall Dune is epic in every sense of the word. The good news is that part two of the film has been given the green light. If the artistry of the first part is any sign of what’s about to come, then fans have a lot to be excited about. But for that, they have to wait till 2023.
