East West University (EWU) organised the second Nehreen Khan Memorial Lecture on its campus in the capital on Tuesday.

Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam, former professor of the University of Dhaka, posed a question “How long will subalterns be confined within a circle” at the lecture programme.

According to him, while the definition of poverty changes in terms of per capita income and social development index, subalterns remain victims of human rights and abuse deprivation.

The subject of his lecture was, ' Subalterns in Literature and Society: Life Inside the Circle’.

In his lecture, he analysed subalterns characters in Shakespeare, Tagore and Nazrul's works, says a media release.

Professor Islam said literature does not cause revolutions but teaches people to think and encourages them to stand up against discrimination, exploitation, and lawlessness.

The lecture was organised in the memory of a former student of EWU, Nehreen Khan, late daughter of Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, former adviser to the caretaker government of Bangladesh.

Professor Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam was honoured with a crest and a cheque amounting to Tk 0.10 million at the function.

Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, Vice-Chancellor, EWU presided over the programme.

Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU, A.Z.M. Shafiqul Alam, Treasurer of EWU, Late Nehreen Khan's classmates were also present at the event, along with faculty members, students and other dignitaries.
