EC plans 100m smart cards before polls

The Election Commission (EC) is set to distribute 100 million smart cards before the next general polls, said Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder on Sunday.

"The EC has set a target to distribute 100 million smart cards across the country before the next general polls," he said.

The EC said it while speaking at the inaugural function of smart card distribution programme at Sylhet City Corporation.

Talukder said the EC has already distributed a total of 12.5 million smart cards across the country in the last year, says a BSS report.

Director General of National Identity card cell Brigadier General Mohammad Saidul Islam presented the keynote paper at the programme.

Regional Election Commissioner Sheikh Anwar Hossain presided over.

Ward-based smart card distribution in Sylhet will begin on November 7. The distribution of the card at 27 wards through 27 centres will continue till February, 2018.

The NID wing has also opened a help desk to this end.
