Egg production in Bangladesh increased by 2.86 times in the last 10 years, according to a keynote paper.
The paper also revealed that per capita egg consumption in the country reached 104.23 this year.
Department of Poultry Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University Professor Dr Md Shawkat Ali presented the keynote paper, titled Egg: A 'superfood', in a webinar, organised on the occasion of the World Egg Day 2020.
The Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) and World Poultry Science Association (Bangladesh) jointly organised the webinar.
The slogan of this year's World Egg Day in Bangladesh is "Eat eggs every day, increase immunity".
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rawnak Mahmud was present in the programme as the chief guest, while Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) Director-General, Dr Nathu Ram Sarker, among others, joined the programme as the special guest.
DLS Director-General Dr Abdul Jabbar Shikder chaired the event.
Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of Dhaka University Professor Dr Khaleda Islam also spoke in the programme.
BPICC president Moshiur Rahman moderated the webinar.
The annual egg output surged to 17.11 billion pieces in the fiscal year (FY) 2018-19 from 4.96 billion in FY 2009, according to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) data.
Bangladesh produced 5.74 billion eggs in FY '10, 6.07 billion in FY '11, 7.30 billion in FY '12, 7.61 billion in FY '13, 10.16 billion in FY '14, 10.99 billion in FY '15, 11.91 billion in FY '16, 14.93 billion in FY '17 and 15.52 billion in FY '18.
As many as 81,425 poultry farms have been registered as of August 2019. Of them, 54,411 are broiler chicken farms, 18,954-layer chicken farms and 7,829 duck farms.
