Flood situation deteriorated further in northern, north-eastern and few central districts of Bangladesh on Saturday amid continued rainfall and the onrush of upstream waters from the neighbouring India.

The Dharla, Jamuna, Gur, Atrai, Jadukata and Sarigowain rivers in the northern, north-eastern and central regions were flowing above danger level on the day.

The Teesta, Brahmaputra, Karotoa, Ghaghot and Surma were flowing below danger mark but might cross it if rain continues, said Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) executive engineer Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan.

Fresh areas in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Rangpur, Bogura, Tangail, Natore, Sherpur, Netrokona and Sunamganj might be flooded in the next 24 hours amid severe rain and upstream water.

The FFWC said all the rivers might continue to swell in Sylhet and Mymensingh regions (upper Meghna basin) for the next one day starting from 3:00 pm on Saturday.

Major rivers rose at 60 out of 101 points on the day.
