Green onions have brought smiles on the faces of hundreds of poor and marginal farmers this year as it is selling at a lucrative rate in Natore. They also made huge profits in last year.

They cultivated the greens on more than 550 hectares of land, up by around 50 from that in last year, said officials of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).

Farmer Forkan Ali, 23, of Boraigram village in the district said green onions is appearing at the local kitchen markets abundantly as it is selling at a high price.

He said he harvested some five maunds of green onions from his 20 decimals of land on Saturday and is expecting to sell all the green onions produce for Tk 7500 to 8,000.

Consumers are also opting for green onions as it is selling at a rate much lower than fresh onion that is selling at Tk 40 to 50 a kg in the retail markets and at Tk 40 to 45 in the wholesale markets.

“I have produced the spice on 33 decimals of land spending Tk 4500 this season,” said farmer Aminur Rahman, 45, under Guridaspur upazila of the district.

“I have already sold onions for more than Tk 12,000 and the remaining could be sold for Tk 8000 more, he said. That means he will make a profit of 155,500 from the farming this season.

DAE Deputy Director Rafiqul Islam said, “Green onion farming is gaining momentum here and we also provide all the necessary support farmers want from us.”
