Hot weather may persist for few more days

The hot weather might persist for few more days in the city amid lesser rain and presence of higher humidity, said officials.

Though a light rain in places with a wind helped to lessen the hot weather condition in the city to some extent on Wednesday evening but the heat might be felt for next few days, said Met Office.

However, the scorching sun with a humid weather caused intolerable sufferings to many people in the city since July 29.

People suffered a lot as humidity level is higher and there was lack of rain in the city, said meteorologist at the Met Office Dr Sadequl Alam.

"There is little change for improvement in next few days", he said.

He said the country's most places including Dhaka city might witness rain in next three days but the velocity of rain might be lesser which will not be enough to end the heat for now.

The Met Office in its three-day forecast said rain might occur at most places over the Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi, Chattogram and Dhaka divisions amid an active monsoon followed by a low in the bay.

Rainfall also might be experienced at few places in other divisions, it said.

The city witnessed 26 mm rain fall from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, according to the Met Office.

Dhaka also witnessed a wind at 20-25 kph speed which gave citizens a sort of relief on Wednesday noon who experienced a heat for last one week.

Maximum temperature of the city was recorded at 34.6 degree centigrade on Wednesday noon while the highest mercury was measured in Dinajpur on the day as 38.3 degree.

Humidity was measured as 78 per cent in the morning which eased down to 68 per cent in the afternoon in Dhaka city, said Met Office.

But overall flood situation in the country’s central regions worsened further. 

 However, river water was rushing towards the central regions creating huge flooding in the areas.

The low lying areas surrounding to the Dhaka city have been inundated further as the river Balu at Demra point, Turag at Mirpur point and Tongi Khal at Tongi point were following above their danger levels.

Over 5.56 million people of 1,058 unions under 162 upazilas in 33 districts in the northern, central and north-eastern regions have so far been affected by the ongoing flooding, according to the National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRRC).

The flood-hit people are passing days in utter misery as the flood has washed away their houses, crops on vast tracts of land, domestic animals and other valuables.

Acute shortage of food and pure drinking water has multiplied the sufferings of the people of the flood-affected 33 districts.

A large number of trees and crops on a vast tract of land were washed away due to flooding and strong current in the river.

Scores of dwelling houses, schools, colleges, mosques and roads went under the gorge of rivers due to unabated river erosion thereby rendering thousands of people homeless.

Flood-affected people are suffering much due to lack of adequate relief materials.

Scarcity of pure drinking water has multiplied their woes.

The Karatoa, Jamuna, Gaur, Atrai, Dhaleshwari, Balu, Kaliganga, Padma, Lakha,  Turag, Tongi Khal, Bongshi, Arial Kha, Titas and  Meghna rivers were flowing above danger level on Wednesday at 24 major points, said Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
