Japan provides 150 vehicles to facilitate waste management

The Japanese government has provided 150 vehicles for Dhaka and Chattogram city corporations to facilitate waste management.

Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Naoki Ito handed over the keys of the vehicles worth Tk 770 million to LGRD & Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam at a ceremony at his ministry at the secretariat in the city on Sunday.

Later, the minister handed over the keys to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam and the chief executive officers of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC).

DSCC and DNCC received 56 vehicles each while CCC got 38 vehicles.

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister appreciated the Japanese government for its continuous cooperation towards the development of Bangladesh.

He said the Dhaka city produced 5,100 tonnes of wastes a day in 2014 and the figure rose to 6,000 tonnes in 2019. And the port city produced 2000 tonnes of waste a day in 2019, up from 1600 tonnes in 2014.

The vehicles will help enhance the waste management capacity by 65 per cent to 80 per cent for Dhaka city corporations and by 75 per cent to 85 per cent for CCC, he added.
