The closed state-run jute mills workers and employees demanded on Saturday to the government for reopening of the mills through modernisation and pay their due salaries without delay.
They said that they had been passing a tough time following the closure of the mills.
The workers made the demands at a human chain programme held in front of the National Press Club.
They called upon all to foil the conspiracy to destroy the prospect of the country's jute and textiles sectors.
They said that they had proposed the government for reopening of the closed jute mills by reinvesting Tk 12 billion aiming to make those profitable.
They also put forward some other demands to the government for consideration that included declaring minimum wages for the workers of public and private sector jute and textiles mills, regularising a worker after continuous three-month work period, allocating sufficient budget for payment of workers' dues in the proposed budget and awarding punishment to those who are involved in corruption and conspiracy to destroy the country's prosperous jute and textiles sectors.
