LoGIC project helps community people adapt to adverse effect of climate change

Raniganj union council under Chilmari upazila of Kurigram organised a workshop on 'Validating the climate change risks assessed by the community people' recently, according to a statement.

Under the four-year Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LoGIC) project, 72 unions of seven most climate vulnerable districts of the country have been conducting community risk assessment.

The districts are: Kurigram, Sunamganj, Khulna, Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Bhola and Barguna.

These risks were already prioritised by the Union earlier which needed for validation to develop Risk Reduction Action Plan by incorporating them in the Union Annual and long term plan.

LoGIC is supported by the Bangladesh government, European Union, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the statement added.

Under the project, the climate-affected community especially women, ethnic minority group, persons with disability and marginalised people will be provided financial and technical assistance to make sure that they secure climate resilient suitable livelihood.

The project will provide two types of grants to promote local indigenous adaptation techniques, strengthen capacity of the local government and to implement climate sensitive scheme implementation.

Deputy Director (Local Government) Md Rafiqul Islam Selim attended the workshop as the chief guest, while Chairman of Raniganj union council Monjurul Islam presided over.

Monjurul Islam said LoGIC project is an important initiative in implementing sustainable development.

It will help vulnerable community adapt the adverse effect of the climate change.

The project will also build climate awareness, technical knowledge to fight climate change impact and resilient behaviors.

The workshop was visited and observed by UNCDF Deputy Director of Local Development Finance Practice Tehmina Akhtar and Global Programme Manager of Local Climate Adaptive Living Programme Mr Fakri Karim.

Ms Tehmina said Bangladesh is one of the major proponents for capital development fund to addressing the climate change.

Mozammel Haque of UNDP and LoGIC Project Coordinator Selina Shelley Khan also attended the workshop.
