BOGRA, Aug 31: Rearers of the district are disappointed due to low market prices of cattle head before Eid.
The farm owners, who usually rear cattle only to supply during Eid al-Azha, are not getting expected market price in this year as government imported thousands of the animals from neighbouring countries.
About 18,320 farm owners of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Sibganj, Nandigram, Sherpur, Dhunot, Shazahanpur, Gabtoly and Sadar upazilas have been nursing cattlehead to be self-reliant, said Khondaker Bazlur Rahman, additional livestock officer of the district. "They have already started selling the animals in the cattle markets and most of them are counting losses", he added.
Abul Kalam Azad, upazila livestock officer of Sibganj, said, "Among these 5,45,543 cattlehead, some 0.3 million may be sacrificed in this district and the remaining will be send to different districts including Dhaka. Around 3, 50,000 cattle were slaughtered in Bogra last year.
"Due to high cost of all the animal feed, the expenditure is increasing day by day in livestock sector," said Altaf Hossain and Millat Hossain, farm owner, under Sibganj upazila of the district. They also said, "We sell the reared cattlehead to the wholesalers spending much in cheap rate compared to previous year."
In a recent visit the correspondent found the cattlehead traders are not showing more interest to purchase the cow from the farm owners at Mohasthan haat on Wednesday. That's why the animals were not sold massively. The farm owner hope for a better price but the traders doesn't buy.
Azadul Islam Babu, 56, under Dupchanchia upazila said that cow is coming from India rampantly, so the price of cattle in the current market is still not reasonable according to the expected demand. He says, "That's why we are very worried about the fair prices of the cattle."
