Households of Bangladeshi nationals working overseas have achieved no improvement in poverty rate in last three years.

A study of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) said about 9.0 per cent of Bangladeshi migrants’ households lived below poverty line in both 2014 and in 2017.

However, the study showed, the income of male migrant workers increased only 3.0 per cent in the last three years while women workers' income remained unchanged.

The study on ‘Impact of Migration on Poverty and Local Development’ was unveiled at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in the capital on Wednesday.

RMMRU founding chair Tasneem Siddiqui said the income of Bangladeshi nationals working in Middle Eastern countries didn’t increase at a desired level due to drop in international oil prices.

"It may impact the overall poverty reduction of international migrant households in Bangladesh, she added.
