Mominul, Mehidy leave Windies to climb mountain to deny Bangladesh victory

Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three wickets in the last session of the fourth day of the first Test in Chattogram on Saturday as West Indies chase a massive target of 395.

At the end of the day, West Indies posted 110 for three in 40 overs. They have to score more than 285 to seal the game on the last day of the game on Sunday. For Bangladesh, Mehidy bagged three for 52, reports UNB.

Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque hit a ton in the second innings, his 10th in Test. He now has seven centuries at this venue. Riding on his ton, Bangladesh posted 223 for eight in the second innings and declared.

Along the way, the southpaw surpassed Tamim Iqbal to become the holder of most centuries for Bangladesh in the most prestigious format of cricket. Tamim hit nine centuries while Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan registered seven and five respectively.

All of Mominul’s centuries came at the home venues — his other centuries were in matches at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

With his seventh ton in Chattogram, Mominul joined Michael Clarke (Adelaide Oval), Mahela Jayawardene (Galle) and Kumar Sangakkara (Galle) to score seven or more centuries in one ground.

Before Mominul reached his 10th hundred, Liton Das recorded his sixth fifty in Tests. Bangladesh eventually declared at 223 for eight.

For West Indies, Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican bagged three wickets each while Shannon Gabriel took two.

West Indies now have to score 395 to win this game and they will get more than four sessions to do so. In contrast, Bangladesh have to take all 10 wickets of the tourists before the time ends.

In the first innings of the match, Bangladesh posted 430 riding on the maiden Test hundred of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (103). Shadman Islam (59) and Shakib Al Hasan (68) also hit a fifty each.

Jomel Warrican was the best bowler for the tourists scalping four wickets while Cornwall took two.

In reply, despite some good batting displays from the captain Kraigg Brathwaite (76) and Jermaine Blackwood (68), West Indies tumbled for 259 runs in their first innings, losing the last five wickets in six runs.

For Bangladesh, Mehidy bagged four wickets while Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan took two wickets each.
