No fuel for vehicles without renewed fitness certificates: HC

The High Court on Wednesday ordered the authorities concerned to refrain from selling oil and gas to vehicles the fitness certificates of which have not been renewed.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam issued the order. It also gave the authorities concerned two more months to complete renewal of fitness certificates, reports UNB.

In a report presented before the court, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) said 89,269 vehicles, out of nearly half a million, renewed their fitness certificates in the August-September period.

Earlier on July 23, the court asked BRTA to renew fitness certificates of unfit vehicles within two months – August 1 to September 30.

On June 24, BRTA in its report said there are 4,89,320 unfit vehicles across the country. Of them, 2,61,113 were in Dhaka, 1,19,588, in Chattogram, 26,240 in Rajshahi, 6,568 in Rangpur, 15,668 in Khulna, 44,805 in Sylhet, and 5,338 in Barishal divisions.
