Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque has said there is no scope to reform 30 per cent quota for freedom fighters in government service due to a legal obligation.
The minister came up with the statement citing a Supreme Court verdict over FF quota at a press conference at the secretariat on Wednesday.
He admitted that there is a provision to recruit people from merit list if eligible candidates are not available to fill up posts from the Freedom Fighters' quota.
"But still there's a legal obligation to preserve at least 30 percent quota for FFs," he said, reports UNB.
"There's no chance to take different decisions ignoring the court order. If it's done, that will be tantamount to contempt of court," Mozammel said.
"Hope, the committee formed by the government over quota reform issue would take decision on it cautiously. A copy of the Supreme Court verdict in this regard was sent to the committee today," he said.
Replying to reporters quarry, the minister said "There's no complication in changing quota for others except the freedom fighters. If the government wants to reform the FF quota it has to be done through court."
On July 2, the Public Administration Ministry formed the committee to review the existing quota system in government jobs.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days.
