The visiting delegation of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has said the organisation will continue to support Bangladesh in a case filed by Gambia over Rohingya issue with the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The delegation, led by OIC Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Amb. Youssef Aldobeay, on Monday also reiterated OIC’s full solidarity to Bangladesh for providing shelter to more than 1.0 million forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals, a spokesperson of the foreign ministry in Dhaka said.
They applauded Bangladesh's initiatives to rolocate Rohingya refugees to Bhashan Char from Cox's Bazar camps and to provide humanitarian assistances for them.
The spokesperson said Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen briefed the delegation about infrastructural development at Bhashan Char island in Noakhali for relocating around 100,000 Rohingya people.
The minister urged the OIC delegation to strengthen their efforts for early repatriation of the Rohingya people to their homeland in Myanmar.
Referring to his recent visit to the USA, the foreign minister mentioned his proposal to the US secretary of state to appoint a special envoy on Rohingya issue who will focus on Rohingya issue and coordinate their efforts for their repatriation.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam also called upon the OIC member states to continue to stress on Myanmar to take back their nationals.
He expressed gratitude to the OIC members for their contribution to the ‘OIC Fund for Rohingya’.
The state minister stressed on further contribution to the fund in order to enable Bangladesh and The Gambia to continue with the case in the ICJ and to reach an early and decisive decision.
Earlier, the OIC delegation had a meeting with Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen at his office, and expressed their views regarding their visit to the Rohingya camps. During the meeting, the foreign secretary also urged for OIC’s continued support to resolve this humanitarian crisis permanently.
