Pointed gourd cultivators in Rangpur make good profit

RANGPUR, Apr 24: The pointed gourd (potol) cultivators across the district are jubilant as they are making a good profit from its sale in markets during this current season.

According to sources, harvesting of the vegetable is going on across the region and the growers have been earning a good profit from selling their produce in markets since very beginning of the season.

Presently, per kg pointed gourd is being sold at Tk 45 to Tk 50, according to market sources.

Bablu Mia, a peasant of Ranipukur area at Mithapukur upazila told this FE correspondent that he cultivated pointed gourd on one 45 decimals of land. He has already earned over Tk 20,000 by selling his produce and was expecting to earn more profit during the rest of the season, he said.

Monnaf, another farmer of Kukrul area in Rangpur city   said that he has cultivated potol on 40 decimals of land. Due to early harvest he is able make satisfactory profit from its sale in markets. He expressed satisfaction over plentiful production of the crop this year.

Sources said that witnessing good output as well as satisfactory profit many cultivators expressed their optimism to expand its farming during next season.

It is learnt that a good number of farmers of the region  have changed their financial condition by farming different vegetables including pointed gourd as its farming has proved lucrative in recent years, sources said.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources the soil of many areas in the district is very much suitable for vegetable farming so it is being cultivated in plenty in many areas. Farmers have been also earning good profit from cultivation of potol and some other vegetables in recent years.

DAE sources said growers are given necessary advice and assistance by the DAE officials in this regard so that they can enhance vegetable production.
