Police have arrested six people on charges of raping a woman in Tangail town, reports bdnews24.com.

The law enforcers arrested the suspects from different areas of the town after the alleged incident on Friday night, Sadar Police Station OC Sayedur Rahman said on Saturday.

They are Yusuf Rana, 25, Robin, 25, Tanzirul Islam Tasin, 22, Mofiz, 21, Ibrahim, 20, and Jahidul Islam, 21.

Police were also searching for Hasan Shikder, 22, and Ujjol, 25, in a case started by the woman’s husband, the OC said.

Citing a statement of the woman’s husband, the OC said muggers took away money and mobile phone from the husband when the couple got off a bus at the terminal.

The muggers then took the woman away on a motorcycle and raped her at different places before she was rescued by police from the veranda of a school, the police officer said.

Three of the suspects – Rana, Robin and Jahidul - gave confessional statements to the court, Inspector Mosharraf Hossain, who led the drive to arrest the suspects, said.

The woman was admitted to Tangail General Hospital for medical tests, he added.

Doctor Zakia Sultana at the hospital said evidence of rape was found in initial tests.

Police would seek 10-day custody of the suspects for questioning, Tangail Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy said.
