A police constable has sent divorce letter after taking dowry and enjoying favour from wife's family in getting his job.

Now the woman, Zannatul Ferdous, in Pabna has sued her husband Al Amin accusing him of torturing her for dowry in the district court.

The case was started on Thursday accusing Al Amin along with his parents Mizanur Rahman and Bulbuli Khatun from Kazipur of Santhia upazila.

However, the police constable, working in Chittagong, denied the allegation.

Al Amin claimed that he sent a divorce letter to Zannatul on February 26 because she had ‘behaved badly’ with him over family issues.

According to the case details, Zannatul married Al Amin on February 21, 2014, on a Tk 700,000 ‘Denmohar’ or dower he had promised to pay her.

According to bdnews24.com, the marriage was not registered at the time.

Al Amin, however, took Tk 500,000 from Zannatul’s family on February 25 that year by signing stamped papers and Tk 200,000 more through cheques.

He later got the police job with the help of Zannatul’s family, she said in the case.

She alleged Al Amin and his family later demanded Tk 500,000 more from her family as dowry and tortured her as her family could not pay the sum.

They sent Zannatul back to her home in December the same year.

“My family spent all the money my father left in my wedding. But my husband has deceived me,” she said.

Her mother Nasrin Nahar said their neighbours who witnessed the transaction managed to have Al Amin register the marriage later after pressuring him.

She said they decided to start the case after Al Amin sent the divorce letter.
