President to visit Rajshahi jail Wednesday

President Md Abdul Hamid will visit the Rajshahi Central Jail, where he was a political prisoner in 1977.

The head of the state will fly to city by on Wednesday and pay the visit on same day, his Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin has said.

Hamid had been a political prisoner from May to November 1977 and kept at Rajshahi Jail.

“Now he will pay a visit to the jail while his stay in the town,” Abedin said.

A bdnews24.com report said, Hamid will confer the Award of National Standard on the first Paracommando Battalion of Bangladesh Army at Rajshahi Cantonment on Thursday and return to Dhaka.

The president stepped into politics as a student and had since been a prisoner several times.

Between 1976 and 1978, he served in different jails across the country following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Before independence, he served in Pakistan jails twice. He was put behind bars during the military regime of Ziaur Rahman.

He had been inmates of jails in Mymensingh, Kushtia, Rajshahi and Dhaka.
