Skills training for women migrant workers a must: Speakers

Bangladesh Nari Sromik Kendra (BNSK) organised a web based orientation workshop on “Safe migration and legal rights: Migration Welfare Act-2013” on Sunday.

Md Shamsul Alam, director general, Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), emphasized knowing and following Migration Act 2013, relevant policies and circulars for safe, orderly and regular migration specially for women migrant workers. He stressed on effective training for migrant workers on their roles during pre-departure and departure time, and in destination countries so that they can protect themselves from discrimination, mental and physical torture and abuse, and thus are able to establish their rights in all steps of migration.

Sheepa Hafiza, gender specialist and human rights activist, said that government, recruiting agents, CBOs and NGOs should work jointly for protecting women workers’ rights. She suggested involving diasporas in the process.

Nazrul Islam, director (Training) of BMET, emphaised skill based training for migrant workers. He said through government training projects they can obtain skills and efficiency to work in countries of destination.

BMET Director (Training) Md Sakawat Ali said women migrant workers must know their legal rights before going abroad, and they should be provided training on different skills.

Md Masud Rana, deputy director of BMET, briefed on existing rules of Migration Welfare Act 2013.

Shirin Lira, IBP manager and social and inclusion advisor at PROKAS, British Council appreciated BNSK for organising the web workshop and its efforts for establishing gender equality of women migrant workers through time based support services.

M Tipu Sultan, ex-president of Female Worker Recruitment Agencies Associations of Bangladesh (FWRAB) mentioned that they are following act and circulars of government during the recruitment process.

Advocate Sipra Goswami presented Migration Act 2013 through power point presentation.  

Advocate Abdullah Al Noman of Supreme Court of Bangladesh presented case implementation procedures.
