Eye problems are common in the modern world. According to a report published in the medical journal The Lancet, by 2050 about 895 million people around the globe will be afflicted with some type of eye problem. This is a staggering 150 per cent increase from now.

The risk of eye disease increases if there is a family history of similar conditions. Presence of diabetes or hypertension, being overweight - all add to the risk. Many of us, especially in the age category of 20-30 are also not taking proper care of the eye, resulting in excess strain and damage to the eyesight.

The good thing is the risk of many of the visual problems can be reduced by adopting simple healthy habits. Maintaining a healthy weight is essential, which brings the question of diet and exercise.

Our diet should be well-balanced, containing at least 05 daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The amount of saturated fat needs to be minimised. Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids — like salmon or tuna is good for the eyes.

Exercising regularly is preferable. The recommendation is moderate physical activity for half an hour every day for five days a week.

Avoiding smoking is crucial since it can directly impact the optic nerve and can cause conditions like cataract. If someone has diabetes or hypertension, these should be kept under control to avoid damage to the eyes.

Sunglasses are required when going outdoor, even in cloudy days. This is to get protection from the UV rays which may be harmful for the eyes. Sunglasses that can block more than 90 per cent of UV rays are preferable. But we should not wear them at night or indoors.

Due to the nature of modern work patterns, a lot of us have to stare at a computer screen for prolonged period. This is really bad for the eyes.

To minimise eye strain, we should place the computer at arm’s length and take a break every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, the so-called 20-20-20 rule. People working in factories or construction must use protective goggles.

Makeups, if not properly used, may be responsible for eye damage. Sharing makeup is not advisable.

Eye makeup should be changed every 03 months. For precaution, eyelines need to be applied outside the lash line and all makeup must be removed before going to bed. In case the eyes showing an allergic reaction to the makeup, immediately consult a physician.

As people get older, there may be some natural changes in the vision. Many people over 40 may need reading glasses which is completely normal.

However, it is necessary to keep in touch with the eye doctor and have the eyes checked out regularly. This will help to identify problems before they become too serious.

It is important we contact an eye doctor if we are experiencing any eye problems. Waiting too long may be detrimental to our health.
