The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and the Benapole Customs House have agreed to the need for building capacity of the land port and putting it into round-the-clock operation.

Also, developing infrastructure of the land port and simplifying the process of export and import at the port are vital for the welfare of both traders and the country, they said.

The observations came at a discussion on 'Simplification of Export and Import through Benapole Land Port' at the Benapole Customs House Office in Jashore recently.

DCCI Vice President Imran Ahmed suggested enhancing capacity of the land port, developing infrastructure, setting up adequate number of sheds for goods, simplifying the process of product clearance, reducing hidden cost and resolving issues related to testing facility for food items.

He also urged expansion of Jashore-Benapole highway to six-lane one, high-speed Internet facility at the port, uninterrupted electricity supply for the Benapole port and setting up of a science lab.

Commissioner of Benapole Customs House Mohammad Belal Hossain said Benapole Customs House has already been using modern software recognised by the World Bank to ease the export-import process.

DCCI directors Deen Mohammad and Mohammad Basiruddin, former senior vice-president Abdus Salam, and former directors Md Alauddin Malik and Major (retd) Yead Ali Fakir attended the discussion.
