Tourism Year 2016

Updated :

I came to know from an article by MH Rahman on Tourism Year 2016 titled The role of hospitality industry published in The Financial Express on June 26, 2016 that a decision has been taken to evict all commercial entities from the residential areas of Dhaka including  Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Uttara and Dhanmondi within six months. As far as I know, hospitality industries in those areas have not grown suddenly. A few Five Star Hotels in the capital cannot provide accommodation to the growing number of tourists visiting Dhaka for various reasons. A large number of tourists feel comfortable to stay at the guest houses and hotels in these areas because they are less costly and more customer-friendly. The hospitality establishments in these areas have created employment opportunity for more than 100,000 people. The commercial banks and other financial institutions have invested in these establishments. The government also earns a sizeable amount of revenue from this industry. Besides, these establishments are not a threat to environment as well.
I strongly feel that for the sake of development of tourism, safeguarding the investments by banks and financial institutions and the employment opportunities provided, the decision to evict the hospitality industries in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Uttara and Dhanmondi needs to be reviewed.
