Two in five jobs face risk of automation

Two in five jobs are facing risk of automation in five key sectors like RMG and textile, agro-food, furniture, tourism and hospitality and leather and footwear, according to a study.

Of the five, nearly 60 per cent job will be automated in RMG sector by 2041, it added.

To this effect, the government along with education and training providers needs to actively anticipate for automation impacts, the study recommended.

The study, conducted by a2i (Access to Information), was presented at a seminar titled 'Future Skills Required for Bangladesh' at a city hotel, organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), on Saturday.

Begum Monnujan Sufian, State Minister for Labour and Employment, was present as the chief guest with Osama Taseer, president of the DCCI, in the chair.

Md  Nojibur Rahman, principal secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, was present as the guest of honour, while Kamran T. Rahman, president, Bangladesh Employers’ Federation attended the function as the special guest.

Mohammad Rezaul Karim, additional secretary (member), National Skills Development Authority (NSDA), presented the study as a keynote paper.

Faisal Samad, senior vice president of BGMEA, Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, PAA, additional director general, Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training and Md Mostaque Hassan, chairman of BSCIC, also spoke as the panel discussants.

Distinguished business leaders, high officials from government agencies and diplomatic missions , also took part in the event.
