Two individuals, one organisation to receive Bangabandhu wildlife conservation award

Two individuals and one organisation have been nominated for the "Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation 2020" in three categories for their contribution to promote nature and wildlife conservation in the country.

The nominations were finalised at a meeting of the Wildlife Advisory Board held at the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change chaired by Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Sunday, according to the ministry in a statement.

Retired chief conservator of Forest and former country representative of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Bangladesh Ishtiaq Uddin Ahmad has been nominated in the category of Forest and Wildlife Conservation Officer, Renowned Researcher, Scientist, Wildlife Conservationist and Media Personnel / Personality.

Dr  Mohammad Firoj Jaman, professor, Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, has also been nominated for in the Wildlife Education and Research category and the Ashurhat Bird Conservation Society in Nityanandapur Union, Shailkupa upazila, Jhenaidah district has been nominated in the category of organisations dedicated to wildlife conservation.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Md Shahab Uddin said that as a result of various reckless activities, wildlife is becoming extinct, the natural balance is being disturbed and environmental disasters are being created. 

The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman enacted the Bangladesh Wildlife (Conservation) Act in 1974 to give more importance to showing love and protection of wildlife, he added. 

He said the current government is working sincerely for the conservation of wildlife.  In this, we all have to come forward.

Each category of "Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation" the award winning person / organisation will be given a cash amount equal to the market value of 2 vori (23.32 grams) of gold and in addition to Tk 50,000 and certificate.

Those will be handed over at the inaugural function of the national fair to be held in June at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, it added.
