UNESCO move proves Sundarbans is under threat: TIB

The Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) has said the Sundarbans is under threat as the UNESCO plans to enlist the largest mangrove forest in ‘world heritage in danger’ list.

“The move of enlisting Sundarbans in the ‘world heritage in danger’ list in its proposed agenda is concerning, and it proves that the Sundarbans is under threat by Rampal plant and other projects,” Executive Director of TIB Iftekharuzzaman said in a statement on Monday.

Expressing concerns about the move of UNESCO, the TIB executive director stressed on stopping all the controversial projects, including Rampal Power Plant, in Sundarbans area and taking necessary measures to meet the recommendations provided by UNESCO.

He termed the Rampal and other projects in Sundarbans area as against proper developments and government stance towards sustainable development.

According to media reports, UNESCO has taken a move to enlist the largest mangrove forest in ‘world heritage in danger’ list in its proposed agenda for its 43rd session, which is schedule to be held in Azerbaijan.    

Earlier, UNESCO said the power plant and other projects were posing significant threat to Sundarbans and the government response to take measure in this end is not satisfactory.
