Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) on Monday demanded an exemplary punishment for those who are responsible for Upaban Express train accident.

In a written statement signed by its secretary general Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury,  the organisation demanded an investigation into the causes of the accident and ensure punishment for those who are responsible for the accident.

Earlier on Sunday night, five coaches of Dhaka-bound Upaban Express train from Sylhet derailed from the tracks in Moulvibazar, killing at least six people and injuring scores.

The accident occurred when the train was crossing a bridge at Baramchal in Kulaura around 11:50pm on Sunday, snapping rail links between Sylhet and the rest of the country.

Mr Chowdhury said that the honest officials of railway are being cornered while the dishonest ones are getting reward.

He said that the quality of railway passengers’ services and speed of trains have been decreasing day by day.

The statement also mentioned that the current government allocated huge funds for over 50 projects to infuse dynamism of the railway services and to improve passenger’s services.

He called upon the government to ensure transparency and accountability of the projects by taking 'zero tolerance' policy against corruption.
