The Election Commission will start collecting data on April 23 across Bangladesh to update the voter roll.

Information about 8.0 million citizens will be collected in this round, officials assume.

They will collect data on citizens who are over 16 years old - born on or before January 1, 2003.

They will be enrolled as voters once they are 18 years old, according to EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed.

After the end of the door-to-door data collection on May 13, registration and collection of the citizens’ fingerprints at designated centres will continue from May 25 to October 30.

More than 40,000 polling stations of the last general election will be used in the registration process.

The EC has assigned 52,500 data collectors, 10,500 supervisors, and 780 assistant registration officers for the electoral roll update.

The dates for area-wise data collection will be announced later.

Dead voters will be dropped from the voter list during the process.

Citizens will also be able to file applications for transferring their electoral areas.

Bangladesh has around 104.15 million voters now – over 52.5 million male and about 51.65 million female.

Secretary Helal also said they would use 42,200 tablet computers, which were bought to collect results from the polling stations with EVMs, in the voter registration process.

The commission had scrapped the tablets after problems due to slow internet speed and software complications in the third round of the five-phase Upazila elections.
