Dengue fever spreading fast across districts

113 patients admitted to Sylhet and Bogura hospitals in last 24 hours

Dengue fever is spreading fast across the districts. It is spreading alarmingly to Bogura and Sylhet.
Patients admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Bogura only get treatment but dengue tests are done in a private diagnostic centre. As a result, patients have to spend additional money for dengue tests. The hospital only "gives us treatment" , alleged some patients.
According to Our Sylhet Correspondent, a total of 22 dengue patients have been admitted to different hospitals in Sylhet divisional city during the last 24 hours ending at 8.00 am on Saturday.
Of them 14 have been admitted into the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and other eight patients are admitted to private medical colleges and hospitals in the city, Civil Surgeon of Sylhet Himangshu Lal Roy said, adding, most of them are female and children.
However, at present the number of patients admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Meical College Hospital is 44 while it is 40 at the four private medical colleges and other hospitals.
The civil surgeon also informed as many as 157 Dengue patients were identified in the said government and private hospitals and colleges in Sylhet city.
Besides, there is no death report in the district, the official added.
The district health officials collected water samples from the city's Kodomtoli area during the last three days and found the presence of Aedes mosquitoes by testing larva.
A crash programme would be launched on the concerned areas from tomorrow, by the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), an official informed.
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet M Kazi Emdadul Islam while visiting under treatment dengue patients at the Osmani Medical College Hospital on Friday afternoon said, "We are contemplating to depute medical teams at the bus and railway stations and airport under a preventive measure as people from different areas will visit Sylhet within a few days on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
Our Bogura Correspondent adds: People in the district are worried as the number of dengue affected patients has been increasing alarmingly over the last couple of weeks.
According to the district civil surgeon office, some 91 patients have been admitted to different government and non-government hospitals and clinics during the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, some 206 people are identified as dengue patients in the district till now, the office sources said.
Dengue affected patients are being treated at the Medical Department of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital, but dengue fever is being examined at a private Diagnostic centre. As a result, patients are being forced to pay extra medical costs, some patients told this correspondent.
A relative of a dengue patient Golam Faruq said only medical treatment is available at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital but examination is done from other centres. "We have to pay extra money to do dengu test from private diagnostic centres", he added.
During a visit to different diagnostic centres on Saturday this correspondent came to know that patients are advised to check NSI antigens, IGG, IGM and CBC for dengue fever.
Assistant director of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital Arifur Rahman Talukder said a five-member committee has been working to combat the dengue spread.
Civil surgeon Dr Md Gausul Azim Choudhuri said, "We are trying our level best to ensure proper treatment to the dengue-affected patients."
Our Correspondent from Magura writes: Anti-dengue campaign by the Magura Municipality was launched recently. The campaign started with distributing mosquito killing instruments among the cleaning workers of the municipality. Subsequently they set up a box at the office to receive any kind of complaint over dengue-related issues.
Stagnant water from different parts of the municipality was removed to destroy breeding places of Aedes mosquitoes. In the inauguration ceremony of the campaign, local MP Saifuzzaman Shekhor was the chief guest with Magura municipality mayor Khurshid Haider Tutul in the chair.
