DGHS reports 35 more deaths, 2423 fresh cases in Bangladesh

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday reported 35 deaths from the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the 24 hours to 8:00am today.

With the latest victims, the death toll due to the deadly virus infection reached at 781, Additional Director General of the DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana said.

On the 89th day after Bangladesh registered the first case of such infection on March 08, a total of 2423 people were tested positive afresh by the COVID-19, taking the number of such cases in the country to 57,563.

Among the victims, 29 were male and 6 female, Dr Nasima said.

Twenty one deaths were from Dhaka division, nine from Chattogram, two from Sylhet, and one each from Rajshahi, Barisal and Khulna divisions.

Of them, three were between 21-30, one between 31-40, three between 41-50, 14 between 51-60, 11 between 61-70, and two between 71-80, and one was above 80 years old, she added.

A total of 12,693 samples have been tested in 50 labs across the country during the period, Dr Sultana said in the online briffing.

Besides, 571 patients made recovery in the past 24 hours, raising the tally of recovered patients to 12,161.

On Wednesday, 37 more people died and 2,695 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

Coronavirus, first reported in China, has so far infected 6,589,291 people globally and killed 388,317 of them, according to worldometer.info, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of the infected, 3,018,514 are currently being treated while 54,228 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
