BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government is making a chaotic situation in the country ahead of verdict on a graft case of its chairperson Khaleda Zia.

“The government's main target is now to create an uncertainty in politics over the verdict in a 'false' case filed against Khaleda Zia."That's why they're now arresting our leaders and activists." he also alleged.

"Our top leaders are being arrested. The government is also issuing various threats and carrying out drives to arrest our leaders when a peaceful situation was prevailing. They (govt) themselves are destroying the stable political situation in the country," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He came up with the allegations while speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office.

The BNP leader alleged that the government is indulging in such acts to hold another lopsided election without the participation of BNP and other opposition political parties, and thus cement one-party rule.

"We think they're again trying to destabilise the country to keep opposition parties away from the polls. The government is making provocations to create an unstable situation so that BNP can't join the election," he observed.

He urged the government to create a proper environment for holding a fair, credible and inclusive election as per people's hopes and aspirations, shunning repressive and provocative acts. "We hope good sense will prevail upon the government."

On Tuesday night, plainclothes police detained BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and its executive committee member Onindo Islam Amit in the city.

Eelier, police detained 69 BNP leaders and activists the same day as they allegedly attacked law enforcers and snatched two of their peers vandalising a prison van in front of the High Court in the afternoon.

Fakhrul demanded the government immediately release Gayeshwar, Amit and other their arrested party leaders, as per UNB report.

He said Gayeshwar is not only a BNP standing committee member but also a 'political scientist' who has been in politics since his student life. "He's active in all democratic movements. He'd also a role in the Liberation War. It's an ominous sign the way he was suddenly arrested."

He alleged that police is not allowing anyone to meet Gayeshwar and to provide him with necessary medicine though he is sick.

The BNP leader said police picked Amit us from his Shantinagar residence on Tuesday midnight, but the law enforcers are still denying it. "At least our 70 leaders and activists were arrested last night."

He said police also raided the houses of many BNP leaders, including Jamiruddin Sircar, Netai Roy Chowdhury, Abdul Manan, Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Shafiul Bari Babu, last night. "We condemn such repressive and provocative acts."
