M A Hashem, the founding chairman of Partex Group, passed away at a city hospital in the early hours of Thursday. He was 77.

He died at Evercare Hospital around 1:20 am while undergoing treatment there for old-age complications and Covid-19, according to a press release.

Mr Hashem left behind his wife, Sultana Hashem; five sons Aziz Al Kaiser Tito, Aziz Al Mahmud, Aziz Al Masud, Rubel Aziz and Shawkat Aziz Russell; and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

The businessman built Partex Group from scratch to one of the largest conglomerates in Bangladesh and set an example of ethical business that inspires many others in the years to come, said the release.

Born in Noakhali on August 30, 1943, Mr Hashem made his modest beginning in the tobacco trading business in 1962.

In the early seventies, he established M/S Hashem Corporation (Pvt) Ltd with its headquarters in Chattogram city.

Mr Hashem was one of the founding members of the two largest private banks in the country - The City Bank Limited and United Commercial Bank Limited. He also founded Janata Insurance Ltd.

He was one of the founders of North South University as well.

Mr Hashem also served as a member of parliament. He was elected to parliament in 2001 from his home constituency in Noakhali.
