Nine out of 10 hepatitis virus infected people are unaware of their infection, said BSMMU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed emphasising proper diagnosis.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Sunday organised an event marking the World Hepatitis Day-2022 to spread awareness in order to prevent hepatitis infections.
Prof Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed addressed the event as the chief guest where he said, on summer days, many people drink cold water at roadside shops, especially sugarcane and lemon juices.
“Drinking glass must be thoroughly cleaned before having any roadside drinks. Because a person infected with hepatitis B virus enters the body of another person through a used glass. It is best not to share the dishes of someone with hepatitis B virus as the hepatitis B virus can be transmitted through the dishes used by others infected with hepatitis B virus,” he explained.
“Nine out of 10 people infected with this virus do not know that they are infected. If there are some changes in the body such as yellowing inside the eyes, fever, change in the colour of urine, hepatitis B virus screening should be done and special treatment should be sought,” he suggested.
The keynote paper was presented by Divisional Head, Interventional Hepatology Division, Dr Mamun Al Mahtab.
President of the Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Dr Selimur Rahman spoke as a special guest, disease controller and line director of the Department of Health Md Nazmul Islam spoke at the event among others.
