Will Lisandro Martinez make United's defence strong?

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Lisandro Martinez for a fee of £56.7m from Ajax with €10m (£8.4m) in add-ons.

The transfer will see Martinez reunite with his boss at Ajax, Erik Ten Hag, who is a big admirer of the versatile Argentine.

Manchester United have had a problem with their defensive setup for quite some time, which cost them some of the big games in the last season as well. With Lisandro Martinez, they were able to land one of the most versatile defensive players present in the transfer market at this moment.

Manchester United have long wanted a centre-back and their search ends with Martinez.

Martinez would be even more ideal for the Red Devils because he is left-footed, and Manchester United were more interested in acquiring an LCB. He is top-notch in his passing game as well and has averaged more passes per 90 minutes than any other player in the Eredivisie.

Erik Ten Hag is likely to replicate his brand of total football at Manchester United, and Martinez could be a key cog in that, as he is not only comfortable in possession, but he is also composed, press-resistant, and accurate passer of the ball from a distance.

Another aspect of Lisandro's game that will come in extremely handy for Manchester United is his versatility.

Like many other players who have blossomed at Ajax, Lisandro is versatile and can play as a left-back and central midfielder as well. He is also quite adept in those positions courtesy of his agility and technical abilities.

Despite his diminutive stature, Lisandro had a 71 per cent success rate in the Eredivisie last season, which is impressive and places him second in terms of current Manchester United defenders, only behind Harry Maguire.

Manchester United's defence in the last few seasons has not been stable and they have looked for many different solutions in many places. But with Lisandro, they might have landed a perfect defender to commence a new era with Erik Ten Hag.
