State-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) initiated test natural gas production of around 11 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) gas from Srikail-East 1 well in Cumilla region Monday.

Last week, BAPEX also had initiated test production of similar quantity of natural gas to the tune of around 11 mmcfd from a separate worked over well Fenchuganj-4 in Sylhet region.

Some 22 mmcfd of gas has been added to national gas grid with the test supply of gas from these wells over the past one week.

State minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) inaugurated the gas production from Srikail East-1 well through online platform.

The government is trying to improve BAPEX’s efficiency through expanding its working arena, said Mr Hamid on this occasion.

He said a move is also there to upgrade BAPEX’s standard to international level.

Sources said, Bapex discovered commercially viable gas at Srikail East -1 in March 2020.

Bapex has estimated that the well might have around 70 billion cubic feet (BCF) of natural gas.

There could be a cumulative 16 metres of gas layer unto 3,071 meters depth at the new gas structure

Bapex drilled some 3,482 meters from the surface to discover the new gas structure.

Fenchuganj-4 has an estimated reserve of around 45 BCF gas.

With these two wells, total natural gas output from Bapex increased to around 130 mmcfd from its eight operating gas fields across the country.
