What to expect from Google DeepMind's 'Gemini' chatbot

Published :

Updated :

Google DeepMind has recently unveiled its highly anticipated family of artificial intelligence chatbots known as Gemini. This cutting-edge technology is set to compete head-to-head with OpenAI's renowned GPT series, signalling a new era in developing AI chatbot capabilities.

Among the Gemini models, Gemini Ultra is the largest and most capable, outperforming OpenAI's GPT-4 in various tasks, including text-based, image-based, coding, and reasoning.

Gemini Ultra's superiority and features:

According to Google, Gemini Ultra surpasses GPT-4 in multiple domains, showcasing its prowess in text-based, image-based, coding, and reasoning tasks. This new model is expected to be available through a revolutionary AI chat feature named Bard Advanced and is scheduled for release early next year.

However, the company assures users that Gemini Ultra is currently undergoing meticulous refinement and comprehensive 'trust and safety checks,' including external red-teaming by trusted parties.

Gemini Pro and Gemini Nano:

Alongside Gemini Ultra, Google DeepMind has also introduced Gemini Pro and Gemini Nano to cater to diverse user needs. Gemini Pro is now accessible to the public through Google's Bard chat interface, while Gemini Nano is designed to run seamlessly on Google's Pixel 8 Pro smartphone.

All three models, including Gemini Ultra, can process text, images, audio, and video, producing both text and image outputs.

Integration into Google's ecosystem:

Google plans to integrate the Gemini models into various products and services, including internet searches and advertisements. This strategic move aims to enhance user experience and solidify Google's position in the evolving landscape of AI-driven technologies.

Developer access and API:

Starting on December 13, developers will have the opportunity to access Gemini Pro through an API, empowering them to harness the capabilities of this innovative AI chatbot. Additionally, Android developers can leverage Gemini Nano to build powerful applications, contributing to the widespread adoption of Gemini across different platforms.

DeepMind's Journey and Evolution:

DeepMind, founded in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, was acquired by Google in 2014 for $400 million. In April 2023, DeepMind merged with Google's elite AI research team, Google Brain, forming Google DeepMind. Over the years, DeepMind, now under the leadership of Demis Hassabis, has been at the forefront of groundbreaking AI breakthroughs, including AlphaGo and the transformer architecture used in modern chatbots.

Challenges:

Despite Google's historical contributions to AI, the tech giant has faced challenges in AI chatbots, trailing behind competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. Notably, the 2021 discovery of DeepMind's chatbot, Gopher, shed light on the company's commitment to delivering accurate and reliable AI solutions, leading to the development of Gemini.
