Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has offered renewed hope for the women’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), promising that the tournament would begin soon.
Aminul spoke about the matter in his welcome address at the ongoing men’s BPL auction on Sunday.
The formal proceedings of the auction began around 4:30pm at a Dhaka hotel.
“You will be pleased to know that we will start the women’s BPL very soon. Those of you here as franchise owners will also have the opportunity to field teams in the women’s league alongside the men’s,” he said.
While commitments to a women’s BPL have been presented before by former BCB presidents Nazmul Hassan and Faruque Ahmed, no tangible progress has been seen to date.
The auction itself marks a return to a bidding system after a decade of draft selections. Aminul explained the reasoning and playfully challenged the franchises to participate actively.
“This year, we are back to the auction format. After much discussion, we concluded it ensures that the best players receive the best rewards.
“We want to create a high-performing environment based on players’ and teams’ performances,” he said.
