BCB election to go ahead as Supreme Court chamber upholds stay order

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election, scheduled for Monday (October 06), will proceed as planned after the Supreme Court’s chamber judge upheld a High Court order suspending the effect of a letter issued by BCB President Aminul Islam on September 18 regarding councillor nominations.

On Sunday, Chamber Justice Farah Mahbub ordered that the High Court’s earlier stay would remain in force, rejecting a state appeal, according to local media reports.

During the hearing, lawyers for the writ petitioners sought to postpone the election, but the court ruled: “We are not halting the election. It should go ahead.”

The disputed letter, sent to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and divisional/district sports bodies, had asked for councillor nomination forms to be resubmitted. Its validity was challenged by several councillors, prompting the court proceedings.

Following Sunday’s order, BCB lawyers confirmed there is no legal bar to tomorrow’s polls.
