BCB reportedly planning to overhaul coaching staff after World Cup

Following Bangladesh's disappointing performance in the ongoing ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is reportedly considering significant changes to its coaching staff.

A BCB source, confirming the development to Cricbuzz, stated that while the positions of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and assistant coach Nick Pothas are currently secure, the duo's future is contingent upon delivering positive results in the remaining matches of the tournament.

Hathurusingha, who took over the coaching role in February 2023, signed a two-year contract to guide the team. Similarly, assistant coach Nick Pothas inked a two-year deal in April. However, the BCB has made it clear that there are no guarantees if the coaching duo fails to turn the team's fortunes around in the World Cup.

The BCB is also set to part ways with pace bowling coach Allan Donald, spin bowling coach Rangana Herath, and fielding coach Shane McDermott, as their contracts are not expected to be extended, according to a report by Cricbuzz. The decision comes amid Bangladesh's lacklustre performance in the tournament, losing five consecutive matches.

The team's analyst, Shrinivas Chandrasekaran, is poised to step down from his position after the World Cup due to personal reasons. Shrinivas, who joined the team in 2017, cited excessive travel as the primary factor behind his decision. Despite the BCB's offer of a contract extension, he declined.

Bangladesh's current struggle in the ICC World Cup has prompted discussions about the coaching staff's effectiveness. The team's captain, Shakib al Hasan, labelled their performance as the worst in recent global tournaments.

This is reminiscent of the decision after the previous World Cup to part ways with coach Steve Rhodes, a move seen by some as scapegoating.
