DSE ends higher, CSE falls ahead of Eid festival

The Dhaka Stock (DSE) ended higher on Wednesday while the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended the day’s trading lower ahead of Eid vacation.

The Dhaka bourse managed to stay afloat as bargain hunters opted to take positions in the beaten-down issues. The prime index of the DSE rises 13.18 points to settle at 5,083.

DSEX stood up after three days of fall. On Tuesday it was the lowest level of DSEX in 42 months since December 9, 2020.

On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, DSEX lost 167.30 points after the declaration of the FY25 proposed budget for FY25 while DSE lost more than 3.2 per cent in three trading days.

The blue-chip index DS30, a group of 30 prominent companies, saw a more than 9.13 points rise to 1812.19 while the DSES Index, which represents Shariah-based companies, rose 7.14 points to 1,100.92 till the end.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 3.51 billion at the end of trading which was 19.73 per cent lower than earlier trading days.

Market analysts said the lucrative price level of fundamentally sound stocks also attracted bargain hunters while the pre-Eid sale pressure stopped.

However, the majority of investors remained cautious amid the prevailing volatility in the market, said a leading broker.

The majority of the stocks saw a price surge, as out of the 395 issues traded, 161 closed higher, 168 ended lower and 66 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Unilever Consumer Care Limited, the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 178.78.52 million changing hands, followed by Taufika Foods and Lovello Ice-cream PLC, Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa Limited, Asiatic Laboratories Limited, and Orion Pharma Ltd.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended lower with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) losing 16.65 points to settle at 14554 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) felling 10.04 points to 8752.836.

The port city bourse traded 2.25 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover volume of Tk 113 million.
