Global action needed to overcome climate crisis

Say speakers at International Environment and Climate Conference

The world is in a dire state due to the adverse impact of the climate change, which needs to be addressed by collective global action, said speakers.

Decisive action must be taken now to build a livable future, they said at the two-day International Environment and Climate Conference organised by the Asian University for Women (AUW) at Hotel Agrabad in Chattogram on Friday and Saturday.

More than 200 participants from 15 countries were present at the conference. Researchers of 50 universities, research institutes, NGOs and industries from eight countries presented 99 research papers.

The conference was supported by PHP Family, non-governmental organisation IPSA and Karnaphuli Fish Meal Limited.

Among others, Director of Department of Environment of Chittagong City Sonia Sultana, member of organising committee Dr. Moosa Selvakumar Paulraj, Professor Dr. Gausia W. Chowdhury of Dhaka University, Dr. Sara Nowreen of BUET, Dr. Nandini Rajamani of IISR Tirupati, Dr. Nadia White of the University of Montana, Dr. Elizabeth Eklund of Purdue University, Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal Sarkar of Oxford University, CARE Bangladesh's lead researcher Dr. Abu Sayeed, IIT Guwahati Professor Dr. Anamika Barua, researchers Dr. Anthony Stephen, Dr. Shanta Dutta and Dr. Amrit Thapa addressed different sessions of the conference.

Besides, on behalf of the PHP Family, Dilshad Ahmed, independent director of People's Insurance Company, Dr. Arifur Rahman, CEO of IPSA, Amjad Hossain, managing director of Karnaphuli Fish Meal Limited, and Afrida Asad, a teacher of AWU, addressed the event. Later, the prize-giving ceremony was held in the presence of the guests.
