Power sector dominates DSE turnover chart

Fuel & power sector dominated the Dhaka bourse transaction chart Thursday led by United Power Generation & Distribution Company while top 10 traded companies captured 27 per cent of the total turnover.

Brokers said the power sector emerged as the turnover leader as the sector's heavyweight issue United Power continued to top the chart for the third consecutive sessions ahead of record date for entitlement of dividend.

The record date for entitlement of dividend of the United Power is January 8. The Board of Directors of the power generation company recommended 90 per cent cash dividend and 10 per cent stock dividend for the year ended on June 30, 2017. The final approval of the dividend will come during the annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled to be held on January 27 as the company recently received clearance from the High Court for holding AGM.

The company also disclosed its first quarter (Q1) un-audited financial reports for July-September, 2017 on the day. As per the Q1 reports, EPS was Tk 2.95 for July-September, 2017 as against Tk 2.83 for July-September, 2016.

According to statistics available with the DSE, about 1.97 million shares of United Power were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 383 million, which was 7.38 per cent of the premier bourse's total transaction.

Each share of the company, which was listed on the Dhaka bourse in 2015 under book-building method, closed at Tk 194.40 on Thursday, advancing 0.83 per cent over the previous day.

Among other active shares in terms of value included Dragon Sweater, Grameenphone, IFAD Autos, Baraka Power, Lafarge Surma Cement, Square Pharmaceuticals, Paramount Textile, Renata and Legacy Footwear.

The top ten traded companies accounted for more than 27 per cent of the day's total turnover on the DSE.

Dragon Sweater followed next, with shares of Tk 179 million changing hands. The company's share price closed at Tk 21, advancing 0.96 per cent over the previous day.

Grameenphone notched the third spot, with shares of Tk 149 million changing hands. The largest market-cap company's share price fell 1.60 per cent to close at Tk 478.20.

IFAD Autos emerged as the fourth leader with shares of Tk 131 million changing hands. The company's share price closed at Tk 130, advancing 2.04 per cent over the previous day.

The turnover of Baraka Power was Tk 121 million. The power generation company's share price rose 1.06 per cent to close at Tk 37.90.

Lafarge Surma Cement was also included in the top ten turnover chart with shares of Tk 98 million changing hands, followed by Square Pharmaceuticals Tk 95 million, Paramount Textile Tk 89 million, Renata Tk 88 million and Legacy Footwear Tk 83 million.
