Stocks end higher on Monday

Stocks closed higher on Monday as opportunistic investors continued taking positions in the sector-specific shares in anticipation of quick gains.

The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) increased 10.58 point to settle at 5,234.95.

The nation's main stock exchange maintained its recovery as rising investor participation ignited dynamic market activity ahead of Ramadan, further aided by a gradual easing of money market interest rates, according to EBL Securities.

The blue-chip index DS30, comprising 30 leading companies, increased by 5.44 points to 1,926.50, while the DSES Index, representing Shariah-compliant companies, increased by 3 points to 1,159.10 by the close.

Meanwhile, investors continued to pursue positions in popular shares to leverage the market’s buoyant momentum, according to EBL Securities.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 5.44 billion, up 11.63 per cent from the previous trading day.

The majority of the stocks saw a price increased, as out of the 398 issues traded, 173 closed higher, 153 ended lower, and 72 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Orion Infusion was the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 167.36 million changing hands, followed by Beach Hatchery, Square Pharmaceuticals, Fu Wang Food and Dragon Sweater and Spinning.

On the sectoral front, Textile (20.1%) issues exerted the highest turnover, followed by Pharma (14.1%) and Food (12.7%) sectors.

Sectors displayed mixed returns, out of which Financial Institutions (1.6%), Paper (1.5%) and Travel (2.3%) exhibited the most positive returns on the bourse today, while Life Insurance (-0.8%), Mutual Fund (-0.6%) and Telecom (-0.3%) exerted the most corrections.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended up with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) increasing 56.62 points to settle at 14570 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) increasing 38.98 points to settle at 8842.8.

The port city bourse traded 4.45 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover volume of Tk 315.09 million.
