The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has urged the investors to avoid rumour-based investments for the sake of their own interests.

The securities regulator laid emphasis on reducing the investment risks on Thursday at a press briefing arranged to inform about the schedule of the World Investors Week 2018.

The week will be observed during October 07-11 at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital to create awareness among the general investors so that they could mitigate the investment risks.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith will inaugurate the event. State Minister for Finance and Planning M. A. Mannan will also attend the inaugural ceremony as special guest.

"Investors become losers across the world due to rumour-based investments," Farhad Ahmed, a BSEC executive director, told the press briefing.

He said the investors should not think that they will be benefited through investments made based on rumours.

"At the end of the day, investors become the losers from such kind of investments," he added.

Another BSEC executive director, Mohammad Saifur Rahman, said many investors make investments in 'Z' category shares following rumours.

"General investors become losers when the vested quarters come out of 'Z' category shares. So, general investors should avoid rumours in case of making investments in shares," said Rahman, also the BSEC spokesperson.

In his reply to a question, Rahman said the BSEC regulates the market through a system.

"That's why it's not possible to take measures against price hikes of shares on day-to-day basis. The market will face negative impact because of day-to-day basis measures," Rahman said.

The BSEC executive directors said the investors should take investment decisions justifying the financial strength of the listed companies.

During the week, the securities regulator will arrange seminars, workshops and discussion meetings to be participated by general investors and stakeholders of the capital market.
