Stocks closed higher on Monday, mainly supported by gains in select large-cap stocks.
The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) increased by 13.53 points to settle at 5,197.
The benchmark index of the stock market returned to positive territory, primarily driven by the price appreciation of select large-cap stocks.
Despite this, investor participation remained active on both the buying and selling sides, as market sentiment continued to be cautious, according to EBL Securities.
The blue-chip index DS30, comprising 30 leading companies, increased by 15.33 points to 1,911.56, while the DSES Index, representing Shariah-compliant companies, increased by 7.52 points to 1,166.29 by the close.
Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 5.04 billion, up 19.7 percent from the previous trading day.
Although the market saw an initial surge at the start of the session, momentum soon moderated as investors remained wary amid ongoing market uncertainties. However, buying interest in certain large-cap stocks played a key role in keeping the index in the green, according to EBL Securities.
The majority of the stocks saw a price increase, as out of the 396 issues traded, 172 closed higher, 151 ended lower, and 73 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
The pharmaceutical sector recorded the highest turnover at 29.8 percent, followed by Engineering at 9.2 percent and Food at 7.9 percent.
Overall, sectoral performance was mixed, with the Pharmaceutical sector up 1.1 percent, Services up 0.9 percent, and Miscellaneous up 0.4 percent posting the highest gains.
Meanwhile, Ceramic -1.5 percent, Tannery -0.8 percent, and Cement -0.6 percent saw the most corrections.
20Y BGTB 28/07/2044 (listed treasury bond) was the most-traded stock, with shares worth Tk 427.52 million changing hands, followed by Orion Infusion, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Shinepukur Ceramics, and Bangladesh Shipping Corporation.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended up with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) increasing by 17.8 points to settle at 14,539 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) increasing by 9.2 points to settle at 8,842.
The port city bourse traded 3.52 million shares and mutual fund units, with a turnover volume of Tk 133.80 million.
