Stocks ended lower on Tuesday as cautious investor sentiment continued to dominate the trading floor.
The DSE's prime index decreased by10.87 points, closing at 5,185.83.
The benchmark index of the country’s capital market extended its losing streak for a third straight session, as cautious investor sentiment continued to dominate the trading floor amid growing concerns over potential US tariffs, according to EBL Securities.
The blue-chip index DS30, comprising 30 leading companies, decreased by 5.82 points to 1,924.89, while the DSES Index, representing Shariah-compliant companies, increased by 1.14 points to 1,167.11 by the close.
Despite a brief intraday rise echoing the previous day’s movement, the market experienced mild volatility throughout the session, weighed down by persistent cautious selling pressure. However, selective buying in large-cap and popular stocks was observed, with mutual fund scrips also leading the top gainers' list—driven by short-term investors focused on quick gains, EBL Securities said.
Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.84 billion, up 2.92 per cent from the previous trading day.
The majority of the stocks saw a price decrease, as out of the 397 issues traded, 149 closed higher, 194 ended lower, and 54 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
Pharmaceuticals sector led the turnover with a 19.5 per cent share, followed by Mutual Funds 9.4 per cent and Banks 9.1 per cent.
Overall sector performance remained mixed. Mutual Funds 3.7 per cent, Paper 2.5 per cent, and Jute 2.4 per cent posted the most notable gains, while Financial Institutions-0.8 per cent, Travel -0.7 per cent, and Telecom -0.6 per cent experienced the steepest losses.
Beximco Pharmaceuticals was the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 240.39 million changing hands, followed by Shinepukur Ceramics, Bangladesh Shipping, AB Bank 1st Mutual fund and Navana Pharmaceuticals.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended down with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) decreasing by 28.15 points to settle at 14,533 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) decreasing by 13.18 points to settle at 8,845.
The port city bourse traded 2.83 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover volume of Tk 65.13 million.
