Stocks witness marginal gain

Stocks posted marginal gain on Sunday, after a single-day break, as investors went on late hours buying spree.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,290, advancing 9.52 points or 0.18 per cent over the previous day.

The market opened on positive note and the positive trend sustain till end of the session amid marginal volatility.

Market insiders said despite the market edged higher, a section of the investors followed cautious stance and observing the country’s political situation as the national parliamentary elections nears.

The DSE Shariah Index also gained 2.84 points to close at 1,226. However, the DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 6.08 points to finish at 1,855.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, however, fell to Tk 5.76 billion, which was 21 per cent lower than the previous day’s Tk 7.35 billion.

A total number of 142,628 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 175.69 million securities.

The market capitalisation of the DSE came down to Tk 3,817 billion on the day which was Tk 3,818 billion in the previous day.

Of the 335 issues traded, 181 advanced, 119 declined and 35 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor. 

SK Trims & Industries topped the DSE turnover chart with 4.16 million shares worth Tk 207 million changing hands. 

The other turnover leaders were United Power Tk 193 million, Saihma Cotton Mills Tk 175 million, Kattali Textile Tk 158 million and Advent Pharma Tk 144 million. 

Olympic Industries was the day’s best performer, gaining 10 per cent, while National Tubes was the worst loser, losing 8.74 per cent. 

The port city bourse CSE also ended slightly higher with its CSE All Share Price Index - CASPI –advancing 64 points to settle at 16,246 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –gaining 39 point to finish at 9,850. 

The gainers beat losers as 122 issues closed higher, 68 ended lower and 33 remained unchanged on the CSE. 

The port city bourse traded 10.53 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 257 million in turnover.
